Magazine research and analysis:

  • The two main inspirations behind the creation of my magazine are ID and LOVE magazine. Both institutions I feel effectively use the digital attention and p,latform they have to promote upcoming talents and already established stars, but still challenge the traditional layout of magazines through their uses of bold colours and taboo topics - both elements of which I am including in my own front cover and double paged spread.

Article:

Jack Appleyard is every stroke an artist. I sat stroking his leg as he gingerly confided in me about a decade of art direction, set design and styling that has had a monumental impact on the London fashion scene. In addition to this, sitting down for a shared club mate and salad in a rainy Shoreditch spot, Jack Appleyard is charming, almost nervous, ever modest – divine.
I first met Jack at VfD, soon to be cast as poster girl for LOVERBOY. The night, organised by Jack, occupied a very specific social space in London. For youths to revolt (in chic ensembles), artists to release, an arena of irreverent creative expressions arguably unparalleled to this day. High octane, unapologetic glamour, spread by the legendary creative partnership between Jack and one Charles Jeffrey. “The best moments,” he smiles, “were when we were making something in the studio and just being like, this is...” he clicks his fingers as if to say how the hell did we create this beautiful thing? Creations of speechless proportions are no exaggeration. LOVERBOY sucked in chic like a blazing black hole of pure glamour. A night for those outcast as ‘freaks’ to be praised for their creations at the altar of chic, and to dance of course.
Jack’s practice encompassing set design, styling and creative direction coupled with Jeffrey’s designs was like the fashion industry discovering a beloved moon orbiting close to familiar territory, a creative influence shining down. Yet, like a shimmering supernova of creativity, glory and gold burning bright. Perhaps too bright. They soon burned so fast and bright the partnership disintegrated. Like a star, the light of this creative partnership is still being gazed upon, admired and felt light years away... the arena of modern fashion as we know it.
The creativity of Jack Appleyard is a universe in and of itself. Somewhere between reality and a dream, chaos and glamour, humour and critique. Jack’s passion for this world inside his head is something he has a continual desire to manifest. “It’s more of a lens-” he explains after some encouragement, “Well, people bring ideas to me and I show them how Isee it!” His lens, this inner world is enlivened and allowed to flourish and bloom, like a winter rose. “It’s through collaborations—” which enables these constant ephemeral fantasies to become visually digestible realities.
  • Love Magazine is a lifestyle (fashion and style) magazine which was founded in 2009 by stylist and fashion journalist Katie Grand.

  • They've adapted themselves to modern media in May 2013 offering/providing a web series for publications such as glamour - this suggests to us as the readership/audience that through there digital presence they are trying to move with the increasingly modern progression traditionally printed and physical entertainment and informative literary texts are distributed.
ID Magazine:

Front cover:

the unique selling pint is the cover over the eye - I am incorporating this into my magazine as I am also doing a unique selling point of the magazine in which the front cover always features a long shot image of someone in stylised outfits which help to convey the modern audience the publication is trying to target through its advertising and content.

This is discussed in the magazines website: "The wink and smile on each front cover – a graphic representation of the magazine's logo – have become integral to the i-D identity. Over 300 of the world's fashion elite, the great and the grounded, have given i-D a cheeky wink, from the likes of Madonna, Tom Ford, Chloë Sevigny, Björk, Tilda Swinton, Drew Barrymore, Lil' Kim, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss"

All direct quotations from website:

  • i-D features people in fashion, music, art, clubs, film and every other creative field, and has prided itself on being the first to scout talents such as Wolfgang Tillmans, Nick Knight, Dylan Jones, Juergen Teller, Caryn Franklin and Craig McDean, who all started their careers here. Madonna, Kanye West, Raf Simons, Grace Coddington, Karl Lagerfeld, Kate Moss, Carine Roitfeld, Naomi Campbell, Selena Gomez, Victoria Beckham and Tom Ford have all appeared on the cover of i-D magazine.
  • i-D has built its reputation on being a consistent source of inspiration in fashion culture. It began as a fanzine dedicated to the street style of punk-era London in 1980, and quickly earned its position at the vanguard of fashion and style, abiding by the premise of originate – don't imitate. i-D has come a long way since its pre-digital, cut-and-paste days and has developed into a glossy magazine that documents fashion and contemporary culture, and has broken ground defining it too. Constantly reinventing itself, as with our website, i-D continues to encourage creativity, which is why after more than 30 years, its editorial content still manages to surprise and inspire.
