Aims and intentions final:
(draft - make corrections)
The 6 part ten minute documentary series, “The N00rties”, aims to de-stigmatise issues surrounding mental health and societal pressure in an attempt to re-open previously silenced conversations. Aired at 10pm on Chanel 5 to a primarily millennial audience, the series will fulfil Chanel 5’s demand through offering a high impact, low budget, informative yet creatively rooted documentary series. The audience of 18-35 year olds and younger is emphasised through the intense and extensive use of effects and overlays as well as the demographics of the characters explored through the free flowing narrative. The programmes layout and format makes the purpose clear as an innovative media text with the intent of creating a social and political bridge between the current and future generation and with respect too. The intended target audience is not only those struggling with the topics explored but is also those wanting to gain an insight into what its like. The programme will be advertised through social media Apps such as snapchat, twitter Facebook and Instagram allowing commenting and interaction between production team and the viewers to control the content they watch as explored through McQails mass communication theory.
The outburst of colours, juxtaposed with the clinical and sombre tinged restricted colour pallet used helps to reflect the momentary progression and self acceptance the attitudes of people and society have had towards the issues discussed. Building a sense of empathy and familiarity between character and audience, the audio visual demonstrates Blumer’s gratification theory - people become more involved in a narrative they can relate to or they feel can prove mentally beneficial exemplifying digital convergence with my magazine in providing hotlines to those needing help alongside a personal yet professional interview with the director. The text sits parallel with artistically shot close ups of the character of Katie, one of the programmes,”social media star” although her story is not shown in the 3 minutes. The contrast of the images and interview helps to reflect the informative but artistically produced audio visual.
The simple yet creatively expressive narrative combined with the informal and accessible lexis code used allows an expansive audience. The use of an industrial mist en scene contrasting the intimate narrative furthered by the use of subtitles helping to further emphasise certain points providing key insight to the audience is effective. The use of an honest and raw narrative with undisturbed and untouched settings conforms to the generic conventions of a documentary heightened by the introductory snippets allowing the audience some sort of understanding with them.
I have constructed the representations of characters through my use of media language as to convey the false illusions digital media can have in portraying ones own mental stability. Throughout the brief exploration of the character of Eliza Dencham, even thought the narrative is fabricated for effect, it illustrates the unhealthy impact closed discussions have on peoples mental health. I wanted to use the introductory montage of positively expression ate close up shots to challenge the stereotypical image of rebellion and disobedience people have of milenials and replace it with one of creative exploration and freedom. The show has political and social relevance - society seems to contain two generations conflicted between conforming to tradition and welcoming progression. The programme is a pursuit of improving broken communication through age, ignorance and deprivation both financially or culturally and challenging this through digital means.
