A conversation starter or the mark of a divided society, the new short documentary series "The N00rties" focuses on amplifying the voice of those still unheard and afraid to speak up,as we talk to director Beatrice Hanbury-Leu about the inspiration and purpose behind her new series.
Us: what was the inspiration behind the creation of the show?
I wanted to focus on characters i felt helped to portray my own mentality as someone who always felt creativley conformed and constantly dismissed when i talked about my own mental health and issues I felt passionatley about. The word wasnt as accepting as it is now and conversations that needed to happen remained silent. My career started through my passion in communication and buildijng social bridges, ive always been fasinated with the deep rooted personal connection and self reflection people can have with online images and video ive dealt with every topic broyught up in the series and I remember the feeling of irony and fustration overhlming, everyone feeling alone and almosgt drenched by thoughts most people felt. I wanted the series to be a virtual hug to those feeling that way. After my first series I felt accomplishd but I needed to create a peice of visual arts targetted towards the understanding of shared issues and pain. I wanted the peices to string together into a fusion of self love and appreciation for the beauty around us which I would inject into a society that I feel is obsessed with self revulsion, obsession with perfection and false illsuions.
Why did you feel the need to include people who already had an existing platform on digital media?
I wanted to use the inclusion of people who alreadty hgad a following such as Elza to help heighten tjhe fact thatsocial media creates a false illusion of, "the perfect life". I felt that it was necesary to emphasise the fact that you n ever truly understand someones backstroy and what thyeyre really going through. People are now born into a world thinking youre skin can be, 'that smooth' and your boobs can be, 'that big' when all it takes is either money or a working phone. Comparison in sopciety has become so toxic. People ca show and hide what they want. Instagrammed sunsets dont show you the battle of alcaholism from the lady behind the camera and dog filtered snapchats dont show you the crippling anxiety thyey face daily, no tweet can explain how they really feel and there thoughts every second. People seem to rely on there own happiness by setting unachievable goals in order to try and search for purpose.
After the air of episode 1, what more can we expect from the series?
You can expect to further indulge yourself in the issue IN the issue the series explores further such as substance abuse and loss. I think that the good thing about being so raw with the complexity of these issues and rying to use complex visual arts to amplify the simple message of acceptance and an imporvment in communication has been understood by the people who have engaged so far. The supports been crazy the issue

I wanted to use the inclusion of people who already had a following such as Eliza and Katie to help heighten the fact that social media creates a false illusion of, "the perfect life".
