Aims and intentions:
The 6 part ten minute documentary series, “The N00rties”, aims to de-stigmatise issues surrounding mental health and societal pressure. Aired at 10 pm on Channel 5 to a primarily millennial audience, the series will fulfil Channel 5’s demand through offering a high impact, low budget, informative yet creatively rooted, ‘entertaining documentary series’ through the use of freely available software such as, ‘imovie’ and ‘vsco cam’. The production is aimed at a large audience of 16-35-year-olds which will be emphasised through the demographics of the characters explored in the free-flowing narrative. The programme’s layout and format will make the purpose clear as an innovative media text with the intent of creating a social and political bridge between the current and future generation. The typical, ‘N00rtie’ viewer is an intelligent and progressive thinker who is creatively inclined typically enrolled in further education. It will be both written to inform and to entertain. The audience may vary from each episode due to the ethnicity, gender and age groups being focused on, extending the overall audience.
The narrative will be constructed to focus on a misrepresented and misunderstood age group who are often socially and politically over-looked. I want to use an introductory montage of happy faces to challenge the stereotypical image of rebellion and disobedience people have of 17-18-year-olds. The show has political and social relevance. Society seems to contain two generations conflicted between maintaining tradition and encouraging diversity. The storyline will fulfil the exam boards brief of, ‘a point of conflict’ in the audiovisual by focusing on the exploration of, Eliza’s battle with anxiety - the conflict of self.
The contrasting representations of different generations will be furthered through the use of mise-en-scene with the impersonal and industrial London setting being followed seconds after by the shots filmed in the vivid glowing dance studio. The use of non-diegetic synchronous sound effects such as a typewriter, which will be played in time with the text appearing on screen as well as light background piano music allowing the audience to focus on the narrative itself. The outburst of colours I will use in some shots, juxtaposed with the clinical and sombre tinged restricted colour palette in others will help to reflect the momentary progression of both people and society. The use of binary oppositions will emphasise the hypocrisy of the society we live in, obsessed with an unattainable lifestyle whilst still trying to pursue being an advocate of self-worth. The title sequence will include a green screen of someone blinking, explicitly suggesting the media text as eye-opening.
The series will display digital convergence with my magazine in providing hotlines to those needing help with their mental health sat alongside a personal yet professional interview with the director. The text will sit parallel with an artistically shot close-up of the character of Katie, one of the programmes, “ social media star” although her story will not be shown in the 3 minutes. The programme will be advertised through social media apps such as Snapchat, Twitter, and Instagram allowing commenting and interaction between the production team and the viewers to control the content. Uploading interviews and behind the scenes footage onto Youtube will allow the production to further its reach.
