General planning:
The ideas of my media coursework have evolved throughout the process:
- My first idea was to discuss and carry out a teen drama looking into the lives of those our age who have been effected by substance abuse - I wanted to explore this as a topic close to my heart and I feel that artistically it could be achieved. I carried out research and even started filming the character of "Katie" for the role.
- I then realised that this would be hard to demonstrate as I had not thought about the physical practicalities but I still knew that some of the artistic shots I had carried out could be kept and reincorporated into a knew idea for my coursework.
- After researching in depth for magazines that targeted a millennial audience I came upon I-D, a magazine that I wanted to mirror in terms of its looks and feel, also helped by the fact that it was perfect in terms of being for a specific target market that was the brief (18-35). I researched further to find out that they also did short films that previewed on youtube - a fast growing platform also targeting a younger and digital reliant generation. They targeted topics such as "what its like being a 16 year old" and "next gen photographers". Overall, I got the sense that they were very future forward, wanting to look out and create a platform for the younger generation and upcoming talent - something I wanted my magazine to voice also.
- With the fact that I wanted to include some of the shots previously done and edited with Katie in mind - I knew that I would have to keep the topic slightly general and also focusing on societal issues. I wanted to create an innovative magazine linking with the forward thinking tone of the audio visual. I wanted the inclusion of the shot I was initially going to put on the front to remain the same as well as being able to use some of the already edited footage of Katie that I used. The shots being ones not specifically targeted at the topic of substance abuse.
- After looking through I-Ds work, the short documentary that inspired me the most was a video named "what its like to be a 16-year old in London today". The inclusion of the discussion about such taboo topics and giving such young people a voice inspired my own project to create a short documentary called "the n00rties" providing an insight into the life of a millennial. I understood that by doing this instead of a simple story it would make it harder to hit the brief however I also realised that through proof of my own research and narrative and the exploration of someones own character throughout, that I could find a way to create that.
